Thank you for your interest in working at the Haas Center and supporting public service at Stanford. Our student staff plays an integral role in the on-going development and delivery of the center’s programs and resources. Many of our student positions provide a unique leadership experience and allow students to help facilitate service and learning activities with their peers.
Below are brief descriptions of the student staff positions at Haas. Most of the positions are posted in the spring quarter and students are selected for the following academic year.

a) Administration
GENERAL OFFICE ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT – Summer 2007
The Student Assistant provides direct support to the staff in Operations & Systems, the administrative, financial, computer and equipment support for the Haas Center. Duties include: filing; photocopying; faxing; data entry; general office work; updating computer software; and assisting in general financial processing. Student needs to pay attention to detail and be willing to learn new things. Full-time, 30-40 hours/week.
DIRECTOR’S OFFICE STUDENT ASSISTANTS (2) – Academic year
Provide direct support to the center’s director, working as a team with the director’s staff assistant in the Center’s front office. Duties vary, and can be shaped to fit interests and expertise of incumbent, but fundamentally include: greeting and directing visitors; general office work; maintenance of databases; drafting of correspondence. 8-10 hours/week.
COMMUNITY SERVICE WORK-STUDY PROGRAM ASSISTANT – Academic year
The CSWS Assistant serves as the primary support person for the Community Service Work-study Coordinator of the Haas Center for Public Service. Primary responsibilities include helping to ensure that the program is organized and efficient through careful maintenance of the records. The work is intensive, requires confidentiality and, while it is team-based, much of the work is done on an independent basis with regular meetings for feedback and check-in. Training will be given.
Responsibilities are: assisting the program coordinator with administrative tasks and record keeping; maintaining personnel files (over 200 accounts); setting up and maintaining database entries; making files for incoming applicants; inputting and filing of timesheets; making deposits and deliveries around campus; archiving: keeping information archives neat and orderly; updating them as necessary; assisting in the CSWS orientation process; and assisting with the program evaluation implementation and follow-up. Applicant needs to be on Financial Aid. Dates needed: Sept-June.
STUDENT VAN COORDINATOR – Academic year
Student community service organizations and staff-led programs utilize the Haas Center Van Transportation Program. The Van Coordinator provides prompt and accurate assistance to students and staff, working approximately 10-12 hours a week with a work schedule of at least 2 hours per day. Responsibilities include: schedule vans, confirm reservations via email, hold regular office hours and hold van orientation sessions for all drivers; provide maintenance check and refueling of all vans on a regular basis; respond to inquiries regarding the van program on a timely basis; provide efficient record keeping and filing of all van related documentation, including quarterly mileage and maintenance reports; assist with monthly billing and other duties as assigned. b) External Relations
ARCHIVIST/HISTORIAN - Academic Year
Assists staff in collecting and recording data related to Haas Center programs and alumni. Works closely with the External Relations staff to identify, review, organize and inventory files, and other materials that no longer have currency for the work of the staff, but constitute useful primary documentation for researchers interested in the history of public service at Stanford University. Arranges for transfer of these files to the custody of the Department of Special Collections; maintains records of the materials transferred, a current set of guidelines for archiving, and a binder of the dated, successive inventories produced by Special Collections for the Haas Center holdings. This position ideally is for an upperclassman, and requires excellent independent judgment as well as broad knowledge of and interest in the work of the Haas Center. Past experience doing historical and/or archival research preferred. 6-8 hours/week during academic year.
COMMUNICATIONS ASSISTANT – Summer, through the following Academic Year
Works with the Communications Director and other External Relations staff to help conceptualize, plan, and publish the Center's print and electronic materials. Support for departmental projects includes information gathering, writing, co-editing, checking for the accuracy of contributed articles, updating website using user-friendly Content Management System, and/or layout using InDesign graphics software. Demonstrated command of English grammar and facility in writing is essential. All software easy to learn. 20 hours/week during summer; 8-10 hours/week during academic year.
EXTERNAL RELATIONS ASSISTANT – Academic Year
Works with the Assistant Director of External Relations to help coordinate department functions including fund development, stewardship, communications, alumni relations, and special projects. Duties are varied, but fundamentally include: filing; photocopying; faxing; general office work; maintenance of databases; research and data entry related to student, alumni, donor, and board member information and profiles; writing projects as assigned. This position is ideal for a student interested in becoming more deeply involved in the work of the Haas Center, but who has a foundation of experience, knowledge and personal values on which to build. The successful candidate must be well-organized, reliable, have good judgment, and be flexible, as tasks will vary considerably but together will constitute a good exposure to the full scope of work at the Center. Proficiency in Word essential; familiarity with Excel preferred. 8-10 hours/week during academic year.
EXTERNAL RELATIONS ASSISTANT – Summer
Works with the External Relations staff to organize department files and coordinate data collection and recording related to Haas Center programs and alumni. This includes preparing materials for archiving at the Department of Special Collections, and supporting the Haas Center alumni survey project. Other tasks include general office work; maintenance of databases; research and data entry related to student, alumni and donor information; and writing projects as assigned. This position requires excellent independent judgment as well as broad knowledge of and interest in the work of the Haas Center. The successful candidate must be a self-starter, highly-organized and flexible, as tasks will vary considerably. Proficiency in Word and Excel essential; familiarity with FileMaker Pro preferred. 8-10 hours/week during summer.
DEVELOPMENT WRITER – Summer
Works with the External Relations staff to coordinate donor stewardship for the Stanford in Government fellowship program, which places 25-30 student fellows in internships in public agencies and NGOs in the U.S. and abroad every summer. Responsibilities include corresponding with fellows, conducting research, writing profiles of fellows, drafting donor letters, and preparing donor packets. This position is for a self-starter (ideally an upperclassman) who is an experienced writer/editor. Knowledge of the work of the Haas Center and the service environment in higher education required. 20-30 hours/week during summer.
c) Fellowships
PUBLIC SERVICE FELLOWSHIPS STUDENT ASSISTANT – Academic year
Works as an integral part of the Fellowships Program team and in collaboration with other Haas Center student and professional staff, to publicize and implement more than a dozen Public Service Fellowships available through the Haas Center. Assist with administrative tasks and office maintenance; work with Fellowships Program staff on publicity/outreach, advising, selection, preparing summer fellows, and stewardship. Fall - Spring commitment. Hours may vary throughout quarter, as volume of work is seasonal (generally 3 - 6 hours per week). Hourly pay determined by previous on-campus work experience and Work Study eligibility.

SCIENCE IN SERVICE STUDENT ASSISTANT – Academic year 2006-2007
The Science in Service Student Assistant will support the Haas Center Science Outreach Coordinator and the Science in Service Program. Job responsibilities and functions include
- Scheduling meetings of the mentor coordinators
- Maintain the Science in Service web site (no prior web skills necessary)
- Ordering food for Science in Service workshops
- Photocopying
- Web search and research for existing curricula and activities
- Filing
- Processing receipts and payments for service-learning purchases
- Stocking the science kits for the mentors to take on site
- Order supplies
Commitment and Compensation. The Science in Service Student Assistant works with Haas Center Assistant Director of Service-Learning and Science Outreach Coordinator Kelly Beck. The number of work hours 6-8 hours per week. If the candidate would like to work more than 8 hours, 10 hours is possible. This is a 9-month position. Salary is $12/hour.
Qualifications. Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision, good written and oral communication skills, knowledge of the Stanford student culture(s), ability to work with a wide variety of people, good organizational, notetaking and program planning skills. Interest in science, math, or engineering education is a plus. Students who are eligible for work study are encouraged to apply.

JUMPSTART CORPS MEMBER
Jumpstart is an AmeriCorps program that recruits college students to mentor 3-5 year old children. Read stories, sing songs, and play games that support young children's school readiness, and earn a Work-Study wage and an AmeriCorps education award of up to $1,250 in the process. Jumpstart Corps members work 8-12 hours a week in local early childhood centers,

JUMPSTART TEAM LEADER (5 positions open - academic year)
Jumpstart’s mission is to work toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. To this end, Jumpstart trains and supports college students to serve as part-time Corps members, working individually with young children to build skills crucial to school success. Jumpstart focuses on three program areas: building School Success for young children by fostering their early language, literacy, social, initiative skills; encouraging strong Family Involvement to help families support children’s learning; and training college students to be Future Teachers and leaders in early childhood education. JUMPSTART VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR (2 positions open - academic year)
The volunteer coordinator recruits, assists in training, and manages volunteers for various Jumpstart service projects that address specific program and community needs. The volunteers recruited by the volunteer coordinator should reflect a balance of college students, local community service organizations, and others who can participate in a range of volunteer service projects. e) Courses, Research
SERVICE-LEARNING PROGRAM ASSISTANT - Academic Year 2006-2007
The Service-Learning Program supports faculty in the development of service-learning courses and provides opportunities for faculty and students to merge public service with academics through several initiatives including: the Service-Learning Initiative, Community Based Research, and Faculty Fora in Public Service Education. The student assistant will support these initiatives by
- developing and publicizing lists of service-learning courses and community-based research opportunities,
- creating mailing lists,
- ordering food for service-learning events,
- organizing printed materials and resource binders,
- developing a service-learning article database, and
- processing receipts and payments for service-learning purchases
Commitment and Compensation. The Service-Learning Program Student Assistant works with Haas Center Service-Learning Program Director, Karin Cotterman to facilitate all activities described above and other duties as assigned. The workload averages 8-10 hours per week over the course of the year.
Qualifications. Stanford students with previous community service and/or service-learning experience are eligible. Others qualifications include: self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision, good written and oral communication skills, knowledge of the Stanford student culture(s), ability to work with a wide variety of people, good organizational, notet aking and program planning skills, filemaker skills are helpful, preference given to juniors, seniors or co-term students.

ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK PROGRAM CO-COORDINATOR
A team of 3-4 ASB Coordinators works closely with the 25-30 program leaders, Haas Center staff, university administrators, and community agencies/organizations. This is an ideal opportunity to play a vital, rewarding role in a nationally recognized community service/service-learning program that enjoys campus-wide support. Coordinators collaborate approximately 5-7 hours/week to ensure that the administrative affairs and external relations of ASB run smoothly. The collective responsibilities of the group include:
-Evaluating and selecting trips/directed reading and leaders for the program year
-Assisting with creating and facilitating the fall quarter 1-unit practicum for program leaders
-Promoting the ASB program/experience and recruiting potential participants
-Coordinating the participant selection process
-Advising program leaders in directed reading and trip design and facilitation
-Assisting with program logistics including van rentals, flight arrangements, etc.
-Overseeing ASB program budget, finances and fundraising efforts
-Establishing program policies and developing program infrastructure
