Working Tools for Current Tutors
Ravenswood Reads is…
- A service-learning program that emphasizes the importance of adequately preparing and supporting volunteers on an ongoing basis
- Directed by School of Education Faculty member, Professor Connie Juel; course co-taught by Professor Paula England (Sociology)
- A unique partnership among the Haas Center for Public Service, Stanford University School of Education (SUSE), and the Ravenswood City School District (RCSD)
Ravenswood Reads, a literacy program directed by Professor Connie Juel ( School of Education), supports struggling readers in K to 2nd grades. Ravenswood Reads tutors work one-on-one with children to help improve their decoding and comprehension skills.
“Very young children love working with adults. The earliest intervention is the best, and the best intervention beyond the classroom is one-on-one tutoring," says Professor Juel. She is the author of Guidelines for Volunteer Tutors of Emergent and Early Readers and Teaching Reading in the 21st Century.
Ravenswood English is now directed by Professor Guadalupe Valdéz through the Stanford School of Education. Contact Ravenswood English through their website.

Stanford students volunteering in Ravenswood City School District are required to have their fingerprints scanned, and a background check run prior to any volunteer activity taking place.
The information provided below outlines the process and the steps students need to take:
- Collect a fingerprinting form from the Schools Area on the third floor of the Haas Center for Public Service.
- Complete the fingerprinting form with the relevant codes (copy these from the sample form available at the Haas Center) and your personal information.
- There is a Live Scan fingerprinting machine on campus. The Live Scan office is at 711 Serra Street in the campus police station, just across the street from the Texaco gas station.
- Each student volunteer needs to take a completed form, with the correct codes, to the Live Scan office. Walk up hours are M-TH 9 -11 a.m. & 1:15-3 p.m. If there is no wait, it only takes 5-10 minutes to complete the process. Students can also schedule an appointment by contacting the Live Scan Technician, Lydia Morgan-Herman at (650) 725-2499 or lydia_morgan_herman@hotmail.com. Additional information regarding appointments is available at: http://police.stanford.edu, select “Live Scan.‿
- It generally takes 3-10 business days to process the prints, so please get this done ASAP.
- There is a $38 charge for processing fingerprints, payable by cash or check.
- Notification of clearance will be sent to the Risk Management Department on campus and then forwarded along to the Haas Center. When you finish your live scan, you will get two copies of your form -- give one to Julie Wilson (you can leave it in her mailbox at the Haas Center) and keep one for your records.
For questions or assistance, contact Julie Wilson at the Haas Center for Public Service, jawilson@stanford.edu or (650) 723-5786.
