Center for International Voluntary Service

CIVS is a non-profit agency formed in 1993 based in Kenya that offers innovative and competent support services to empower communities and organizations aimed at stimulating self-development initiatives among the disadvantaged, especially women, as well as developing harmonious relations among people of different backgrounds and cultures.

CIVS organizes medium and long term projects and three-week workcamps. Medium and long term projects can run from two months to two years. Workcamps run between the 8th and 28th of each month in collaboration with the local communities, where the volunteers work with the communities in different sectors. CIVS also runs special bi and trilateral workcamps in which volunteers from one or two countries work in a camp with Kenyan volunteers.

Development personnel and volunteers help in capacity enhancement through specialized and non specialized tasks e.g. community advancement training, rehabilitation of sick projects, resource and savings mobilization, credit delivery, project supervision, cultural festivals, product development, exhibitions, development education workshops and marketing. CIVS also encourages intercultural exchange amongst the volunteers and between volunteers and the community. This relationship has been invaluable and greatly appreciated by the three main stakeholders - the communities, the volunteers and CIVS - since everyone benefits and learns from each other's expertise, experience, knowledge and skills.
