Breakthrough Collaborative Teaching Position

Breakthrough Collaborative is a national non-profit that increases educational opportunity for high-potential, low-income middle school students and inspires outstanding college and high school students to pursue careers in education. Breakthrough’s innovative Students Teaching Students model partners middle-school students with college and high school students who serve as teachers, role models and mentors, providing real-life examples that it’s ‘cool to be smart’.

Breakthrough teachers put in long hours, stretch themselves in new ways, face obstacles unlike any other they’ve seen, and they are thankful for the opportunity. The Breakthrough teacher commitment includes:
  • An eight-week commitment, including one week of training, six weeks of teaching, and one week of wrap-up. Dates vary by site, and are available on the application site. The Breakthrough day runs from 7:30AM to 5:00PM, and full attendance is required.
  • Teach 2 core academic classes and one elective of the teacher's own design. Though teachers will generally be alone in a small classroom (appx. 7 students), they will be supervised and supported by experienced professional educators.
  • Direct the program as Dean of Students, Department Chair, Committee Chair or other staff leader.
  • Serve as a mentor for these exceptional young people. Model excellence. Be a genuine educator.
Teaching at Breakthrough is a volunteer internship; however, there is a living expenses stipend of $1000 that is enhanced according to need.
